Bookends from Rare Antique Leather Books Samuel Johnson
Unique Bookends, made from Rare, antique leather books, gilded spines, and both books can still be read, if desired. They are Volumes 1 & 2, by Samuel Johnson, L.L.D. (he wrote the first English Dictionary), and titled, “The Lives of the Poets,” and written in the English language. The original owner of these volumes, T. B. Grierson, has written, in beautiful script, notes detailing Johnson’s comments upon finishing the volumes, as well as having noted the author’s date of death, “13 Dec. 1784.” Grierson’s own bookplate is affixed to the front endpaper, and his signature in ink, appears on the reverse of his notes. These are special volumes, indeed, published in Glasgow, in 1839.
Both books have considerable wear, although the pages are in very good, pliable condition; the last few pages of each book cannot be accessed, as they are now part of the bookend fixture. Keep in mind that these are now decorative, utilitarian bookends, and the wear of the last 167 years adds much to their charm. 7.25" (18.41 cm) tall, 4.5" (11.43 cm) wide, 1.25-1.50" (3.17-3.81 cm) thick. In attractively worn condition. c. 1839.
Item No. 1723, Available.
